Sujit Choudhry is a leader in constitutional development as countries become democratic. In his interview with CEOCFO Magazine in the 2017 Spring issue, he shares with us his heart. He founded The Center for Constitutional Transitions to bring together thinkers and producers for the drafting, redirecting and practical strategem implementation of evolving democratic governance (constitutionaltransitions.org). ¬†Sujit Choudhry’s unique personal development helped fuel his current societal contributions.

As a child immigrant whose parents valued education, he would come to obtain advanced degrees in law from three different countries: Canada, UK, and USA. Oftentimes, citizens of a country take their own laws of the land for granted having grown into the imitation of accepted societal norms that regulate daily living. But when you are an immigrant, or even a visitor, into a different land, you tend to walk more conscientiously regarding the things that you say, do and expect. This unique perspective has allowed the platform of global understanding and approbative sharing of the planet to benefit greatly from Sujit Choudhry. His network of global colleagues, practical insights and human comprehension assemble and combine to address constitutional issues as countries embrace democracy.

Over recent years, Sujit Choudhry has noticed that, as other countries grow and develop, the democratic tradition of the USA has become progressively challenged. It is no longer the benchmark but, in actual fact, is viewed as possessing opportunities for improvement in its own landscape. Sujit Choudhry emphasizes the importance of listening to the people and believing that they do have an understanding of what they and their government needs. As boundaries blur on a global scale, the core question igniting debate of constitutional articles stem from the varying religious, linquistic and ethnic or cultural observances of diverse populations. How does a state adopt one uniform body of governing guidelines that will address such a kadeidoscope of values without trampling human rights, peace and economic advancement; all considered inherent in the platform of democratic stability? He points out that it is imperative that leaders not succumb to the ease of assumption which could, in turn, lead to authoritarianism, elitism, mass neglect, and the like. Per his individual journey and pursuits, Sujit Choudhry has been charged with the task of facilitating impactful discussion of constitutional application.
