Stream Energy: The Generous Company

In August of 2017 residents of Houston, Texas were confronted by Hurricane Harvey. The hurricane swept through the area bringing unimaginable levels of rainfall. The heavy rain caused many areas to become flooded. Many unfortunate people lost their lives and their homes. One of the first companies in the region that stepped up first to assist in funding for the rebuilding of the shattered community was Stream Energy. Corporate philanthropy is at the very core of the culture in the company. Employees and the executives of the company have all put an effort to give back to the community. Stream Energy has given back to the community for several years but they recently started a new charity called “Stream Cares”. The advantages for Stream are they can give back to the community and they will earn greater respect and recognition from the public and potential clients.

It is common that when a company does a charitable act, they make sure to broadcast it, so the public is fully aware. This can benefit a company in recessions, when revenues may drop, or they must lay off some of the staff. Many people have an image of greedy corporations who only care about profit margins. In truth, corporate America is very generous and corporations across the US gave over $19 billion in total to various charities in 2016.

Stream Energy has a very easy-to-follow business model. They pay their employees to build a network of satisfied and loyal clients and can offer a myriad of services and products. It is possible that associates that perform well in sales can earn commissions. It is often the associates who pick a charitable cause that they are passionate about. Among all the members of Stream Energy, they all feel strongly about homelessness. Every year Stream partners with Hope supply company and they feed over a thousand homeless children and take them to have a fun day at a water park. Supplies and money are also donated for the cause.

Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin: Protecting the Migrants from Discrimination and Abuse

There are millions of migrants from Latin America who come to the United States to live and work. However, they face discrimination and abuse from racist people, and they are being blackmailed with deportation if they will fight back. Joe Arpaio is one of the best examples of racist Americans who keep on profiling and discriminating against the migrants. He served as the sheriff of Maricopa County from 1992 to 2016, and under his leadership, many legal immigrants were suspected of being undocumented and arrested because of suspicion.

The migrant community in Maricopa County had spoken about the injustices committed by Joe Arpaio, and he was warned by the county attorney’s office several times because of his manner. The former sheriff of Maricopa County ignored the warnings of the county attorney’s office, and he was arrested because of contempt.

Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin are Phoenix-based journalists and activists who are fighting for the rights of the migrants. They celebrated after learning about the arrest of Joe Arpaio, saying that someone like him deserves to be in jail. Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin were also imprisoned by Joe Arpaio back in 2007, after being accused of sharing confidential information on their website. Joe Arpaio ordered his men to arrest the two, and they were taken to court to hear their case. They were imprisoned for 24 days, and the case of Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin attracted national attention because of how the Maricopa County sheriff abused his power.

The public demanded the release of the two activists and asked the judge to dismiss the case because it violates the right of free speech assured by the First Amendment of the United States Constitution. The judge handling the case dismissed it because of the weak evidence presented by the camp of Joe Arpaio.

Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin filed a counter lawsuit, as suggested by their attorney. The two activists won the lawsuit, and they were awarded $3.75 million. They used the money to set up the Larkin and Lacey Frontera Fund, which is a private fund dedicated to migrants who are looking for financial assistance. The private fund that the two established is still being used today to fund activities that are made for the migrants.

After Joe Arpaio was arrested because of contempt, he told the people who wanted him to go to jail that he will be pardoned once Donald Trump wins the presidency. In November 2016, Donald Trump won the presidential elections, and he was sworn in as the President of the United States in 2017.

He pardoned Joe Arpaio, much to the dismay of Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin. After he was pardoned, Joe Arpaio announced his intentions to run for the Senate, and the camp of migrants all across the United States started a petition for the public not to vote for the former Maricopa County Sheriff.

Stories about his atrocities, including the infamous tent city, began to surface and negative news about his leadership flooded the internet.
