Is Advice from Dr. Saad Saad Hard to Swallow?

With more than 40 years of experience in pediatric surgery, Dr. Saad Saad is still hearing great things about all that he ever taught his students. Additionally, he left behind a fantastic legacy for his family. What you may know is that he helped more than a thousand children, and he also performed some of the most complicated surgeries in the world. Dr. Saad would often aid in the removal of foreign objects that were stuck in a child’s windpipe or esophagus. What is the best advice the good doctor could give to parents?

Although it may seem counterproductive, the best way to attempt to clear a child’s windpipe is to hold them upside down by their legs, and see if the object will dislodge. This is generally easier for children that are 6 years old and younger. Although it may seem like a good idea, sticking your finger into a child’s mouth to attempt to get something out or get it loose, isn’t always safe for the child.

The other way to go about helping a child with an object stuck in their windpipe is to perform the Heimlich maneuver. Standing behind the child and wrapping your arms around them can give you the right angle to help someone choking or unable to take in air. One of the greatest testaments to Dr. Saad Saad’s career, was his invention to help doctors that use endoscopes in this situation. His personal improvement upon the endoscope has made it a lot easier for doctors to help their young patients. His improvement for the endoscope was to create an anti-fog device.

Although the trachea produces fluids that aid in swallowing, it is difficult for the doctors to see when those fluids create fog. Using a vacuum to suck out the liquids is no longer troublesome. The need to stop and vacuum liquids would slow down the process of helping young patients, but it is also distressing for patients. This improvement by Dr. Saad Saad continues to improve the process for medical students. His inventions have also inspired other doctors to keep thinking about better ways to do things.
