Knowing More About The Larkin And Lacey Frontera Fund

Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin are the founders of the village voice media. They had found this in 1970. It was an alternative weekly newspaper. It was being distributed in Phoenix, Arizona.

Besides, Mike Lacey and Jim Larkin can be considered to be the only journalists who have been arrested for what they had written in it. It was in 2007 that Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin were arrested for the violating the grand jury secrecy laws. The arrest was made by Maricopa County sheriff, Joe Arpaio.

Their long and illustrious careers ended with this arrest. But the charges that were pressed against them were dropped by the county attorney, Andrew Thomas. Later, Lacey and Larkin sued Sheriff Arpaio, besides the county attorney, Thomas, along with the special prosecutor Dennis Wilenchik. The charges were a violation of their First Amendment Rights along with abuse of power. The ruling came in 2012. The 9th U.S. Circuit of Appeals stated that there was no cause for their arrest as Wilenchik never consulted a grand jury and this was contrary to his claim.

Later the case was settled by Maricopa County. Lacey and Larkin were awarded $3.75 million in damages. They used this settlement money for establishing the Frontera Fund. This is assisting the Hispanic community that is based in Phoenix.

In addition, the Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund is supporting all those groups that are advocating for civil, human, as well as migrant rights. It supports Groups that advocate freedom of speech. It seeks to enhance civic participation throughout Arizona. This would also include the Mexican border.

There is one more organization that is related to the mission of the Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund. This is the Border Angels. It is also known as ‘Angeles de Frontera.’ This is a non-profit organization which is based in San-Diego. It was founded in 1986 by Enrique Morones.

Border Angels are also engaged in community education. It undertakes several awareness programs. These include guided trips that are made to the desert. Then water is placed along routes that are crossed by migrants. This would help to know about the history of border policy between the US and Mexico.
